Remaining physically active is one of the most important things that you can do for your health. This is especially true as you age. With age, the metabolism slows and the risk for age-related issues increases. A healthy diet and regular activity reduce these risks and contribute to overall physical health, as well as cognitive and mental wellbeing. We recently sat down with Senior Learning Institute™ Sponsor, Dr. Beth Templin, DPT and Owner of HouseFit, and she shared some insight on staying active as you age.

Keep moving!

People entering retirement age often find that their daily activity level decreases. Inactivity can lead to issues including weakness, arthritis, and poor balance. Poor balance, in turn, can contribute to falls that significantly decrease an individual’s quality of life.

Regular exercise reduces pain and helps with managing weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, and many other risk factors for chronic illness. Staying active not only helps you physically, but mentally as well. Regular exercise has proven to improve sleep, boost mood, and reduce stress.

With the lighter schedules of retirement, many people find it the perfect time to pursue new, enjoyable activities. According to the CDC, older adults need at least thirty minutes of moderate exercise at least five days a week. Always remember that some physical activity is better than none! Do remember to check with your physician before beginning any exercise program.

Don’t let your age limit your possibilities!

There are so many activities that can be enjoyed during the senior years: walking, biking, dancing, running, yoga, and more! Yes, there are risks when it comes to age-related injuries, but the benefits of staying active far outweigh the risks. It is wise to begin slowly and check with a doctor who knows about your health conditions and past injuries.

Physical therapy is a great way to start your journey to becoming more active and to keep your daily activities (climbing stairs, getting out of bed, getting up and down from the floor) manageable. HouseFit offers a variety of services including in-person workshops, clinic therapy, and at-home therapy services for adults ages 55+ to live their best and most active lives. They specialize in fitness and independence at any age and focus on keeping aging adults as physically active as possible.

”After starting services at HouseFit, I was able to do things I haven’t done in years! We took an Alaskan cruise and I was able to canoe and hike through the forest and I was able to walk up the stairs each day to our cabin on the 7th floor!” - Kathy, 71 HouseFit Client
